| Whakarāpopototanga: | General Objective: Determine the knowledge that parents and/or legal guardians have regarding asthma and the treatment of asthmatic patients that went to the pediatric emergency room of the Hospital Universitario the Caracas. Specific objectives: Assess the knowledge about asthma, the factors that can provoke an asthma attack, the outpatient treatment and rescue treatment from an attack in the parents of asthmatic patients. Correlate this knowledge with the number of asthma attacks warranting treatment in the pediatric emergency room that the patients had during the last year. Method: A descriptive and trans sectional study was conducted. A ten 10 items knowledge based survey was given to the parents and/or legal guardians in order to evaluate their knowledge about asthma. Results: 50% of the questions were answered correctly, nonetheless there was no significant statistical relationship between the extent of knowledge about asthma that parents and/or legal representatives have and the number of asthma attacks their children had during the last year. Conclusions: The knowledge that parents and/or legal representatives have about asthma is insufficient for management of asthma at home. Enfasis should be done to improve the quality of education and counseling that parents receive during clinic visits to better control their children’s asthma at home. |
