| সংক্ষিপ্ত: | It is estimated that over 1 billion individuals are infected with helminth parasites worldwide. Individuals from tropical environments and underdeveloped countries are the most affected with these parasites. Currently, more than 130 million people suffer from asthma and the numbers are increasing. The increase of allergic diseases in the industrialized world has often been explained by a decline in infections during the childhood. However, the variable frequencies of allergies in the tropics are not well understood. Epidemiologic studies have pointed to a protective role of helminthic infections in the development of allergy and asthma; however, evidence for this inverse association has not been consistently established. The focus of this review is to discuss some of the relevant aspects of this fascinating association and to point out our experience of more than 20 years of research in this area in Venezuela. Also analyze prospective studies that will be necessary to clarify this relationship. |
