Summary:The ophidic accident is an important disease in our country, the high health socioeconomic impact generated at the patient, their complications and consequences. It is uncommon in children but can cause significant morbidity and occasional mortality. Treatment requires between 50 and 75% of accidents to prevent death, amputation or permanent sequela. Objective: to evaluate the epidemiological behavior of snakebites in Medical Pediatrics and Infectious Pediatrics services of University Hospital of Caracas during the period from January 2005 to December 2015. Method: descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study by review of clinical histories with diagnosis of ophidic accident at the University Hospital of Caracas. Results: 56 medical records were reviewed and analyzed, with male predominance being 55% (n = 31), mean age was 6.53 ± 3.17 years, right lower limb was the most affected, foot 29% (n = 16), leg 21% (n = 12), by genus Bothrops 79% (n = 44). The degree of moderate poisoning was observed in 48% (n = 27), local manifestations in 98% (n = 55) of patients, predominantly edema, pain and ecchymosis, mean hospital stay of 14, 03 ± 11 days, there were complications 44% (n = 28), of these 82% (n = 23) presented compartment syndrome and 39% (n = 11) local infections, there was no mortality due to this cause. Conclusions: Ophidic accidents in pediatric age are uncommon, but present a degree of intoxication of greater severity than the adult, as well as complications, requiring prolonged hospital stay.
