| Summary: | : Hospital Acquired Infections are those entities present in the incubation or upon admission to the hospital and presented it after 48-72 hours. Between 1970- 1990 studies show that 5 to 15% of patients admitted to a hospital suffering an infection, of these up to 25% died, and remained between 5 and 10 days. The incidence depend on the characteristics of the hospital and the control measures applied. Vary between 2 and 25% of those admitted, more frequent in oncology services, transplants, intensive therapy, surgery / traumatology. In order of frequency; the most frequent: urinary tract infections (27%), respiratory airways (20.6%) and surgical wounds (17.5%). Objectives: To establish the prevalence of Hospital Acquired Infections in the intensive therapy Hospital Vargas, Caracas, Capital District. Likewise: determine the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of these define the existence of this relationship between the number of days of hospital stay and occurrence of the same, with a record of the most common nosocomial germs and establishing patterns of susceptibility resistance. Methods: Research observational, descriptive and retrospective type, through the review of stories belonging to the intensive care unit of Vargas Hospital of Caracas (January-December 2014), with subsequent registration tab as data collection instrument. Results: 70patients evaluated, 17% had nosocomial infections, mostly belonging to the surgical area, being more frequent respiratory infections in 9patients (75%) and secondly the urinary (25%).
