Summary:Detection of left ventricular hypertrophy and diastolic dysfunction in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients by echocardiographic methods and B-type natriuretic peptide Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertensive patients has been associated with increased cardiovascular events and deterioration of long-term cardiac function. Objective: To establish the presence of LVH and diastolic dysfunction (DD) by echocardiography, and its relation to increased plasma levels of BNP, as a prognostic marker of ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with high blood pressure, recently diagnosed. Patients and methods: We evaluated 20 patients with newly diagnosed PAE, performing a medical history through a multiple choice survey, transthoracic and sampling for determination of serum BNP levels. Results: It was observed in 60% HVI of DD patients and in 95% thereof, with values of BNP in the normal range in 100% of cases. The correlation of the primary endpoints, development of LVH - DD and elevated serum BNP proved to be not significant. Conclusion: the relationship between the presence of LVH, DD and elevated BNP, not possible to estimate the prognosis of cardiac structural and functional changes in recent stages of hypertension
