Sumario:Abstract This paper aims to analyze the influence of macroeconomic policy on the Venezuela’s food security during 1989-2007 period, focusing on the meat chain. In this context, the repercussions of this relation on rural development are discussed. It is based on a systemic approach that emphasize the relationships of the Venezuelan agro-food system (VAS) with the macroeconomic policy and economic framework. The analysis is supported on time series of indicators that came from public and private sources, which seek to measure the relative prices performance, the per capita consumption¸ the protein adequacy and the VAS’s autonomy. It is concluded that economic policy joint to the higher efficiency of poultry production induced the substitution of beef by chicken meat which improve the protein adequacy. Consequently, it has generated a strong relation between the foreign protein dependency and protein adequacy, because of the role developed by poultry industry in the improvement of protein adequacy. Since a big part of Venezuela’s natural resources are linked to beef production, the situation described involve a conflict between the rural space vocation and pattern consumption, which implicate an important constraint to the development of areas specialize in beef production. Since the consumption tendency evidence to be a structural one it demand to think how to enhance the diversification of the rural space, in the regions involve in beef production, to optimize their utilization.
