Description
Summary:This study explored the attitudes of 154 non-psychiatric medical residents of Hospital Universitario de Caracas (HUC), towards patients with mental disorder. For this, we used the Questionnaire of Attitudes Toward Mental Illness and Struening Cohen (1979) adapted to the spanish population by Yllá, Ozamiz and Guimón (1982), administered to a stratified sample, for which categories were taken according to the medical departments of the hospital. The psychometric properties of the instrument were studied, later establishing relationships with sex, age, specialty, time of practice, previous contact with a psychiatric patient, year of residency, history of psychiatric disorder and history of being seen by a specialist. It was found that bias, etiology, negativism and stigma and positivism and good treatment of psychiatric patient, were the dimensions of the attitude variable, correlated with the other variables, finding a general positive attitude towards these patients. One can say that the attitudes of residents towards the patient with mental disorders were related to resident’s personal and professional variables, which should be considered to encourage not only positive predispositions towards psychiatric patients, but to the medical specialty and to the interconsultation care.
