Summary:To compare the postoperative analgesic efficacy of two doses of magnesium sulfate intravenous infusion during inguinal hernia repair, performed under spinal anesthesia neuroaxial, at the University Hospital of Caracas. Methods: Comparative randomized prospective study. 20 patients classified as I-II on the scale of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, aged 18-60 years, divided into two groups. Group A received a bolus of magnesium sulfate 30 mg / kg IV, followed by an intravenous infusion at 10 mg / kg / h. Group B received the same bolus, followed by infusion at 20 mg / kg / h. Results: The characteristics of both groups were not statistically different in terms of age, sex, body mass index, surgical infusion time or magnesium sulfate. no significant decrease in heart rate and blood pressure was observed regardless of dose, and intergrupalmente the differences were not statistically significant in any of the evaluated times. As for postoperative analgesia both showed similar degree of analgesia and equal requirements of additional analgesia and morphine dose (p> 0.05). Conclusion: infusion both doses are equally effective in producing postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing inguinal hernia repair under spinal anesthesia laparotomy
