| Izvleček: | surgical site infections (ISO) are a public health problem today, so it is essential that surgical services have accurate knowledge about its impact as possible to reduce their own figures. Objective: To describe aspects of the ISO in the service of General Surgery Western General Hospital "Dr. José Gregorio Hernández" in the period between February 2011 and June 2011. Methods: Prospective and descriptive, with the population studied all patients treated in the institution that developed ISO. Data were recorded on a predesigned format. For their analysis took into account the classification of the wound, the risk factors related to the patient and the type of surgery, according to the NNIS. Results:Of 175 patients who underwent 13 developed ISO, of which 61.5% were male and 38.5% female. Total patients with ISO had ASA I and II, 46.2% of the wounds were dirty - contaminated, 53.8% of the interventions lasted less than 120 minutes. 53.8% of cases had a risk of infection of 7% according to the NNIS. The most frequently isolated microorganism was Escherichia coli in 38.5%, 61.5% of the isolates were susceptible to Aztreonam. Conclusion: Knowing the characteristics of the ISO in hospitals is of paramount importance, since they provide epidemiological data are quality indices in surgical services. |
