| Summary: | To evaluate the effect of metformin on the values of GLP - 1 and HOMA - IR in patients with insulin resistance and polycystic ovary syndrome. Methods: This was a prospective, nonrandomized, in 30 patients, was determined GLP - 1 and Glucose Tolerance Test, and treatment was initiated with metformin 1000 mg / day for 2 months. Results: HOMA -IR, in the overall sample showed a decrease, Pre - treatment: 3.48 (2.74 to 4.79) vs . Post-treatment: 2.10 (1.67 to 5.00) [p = 0.014 ] . GLP - 1, the total sample presented a similar behavior both pre- treatment and posttreatment [ 0.30 ( 0 to 0.90 ) pmol / L vs . 0.30 ( 0.20-0.40 ) pmol / L respectively ; p = 0.205 ] , the group of 30 years or more had decreased values of GLP -1 in the posttreatment [ 1.20 ( 0.55 to 1.65 ) pmol / L vs. 0.35 ( 0.30 to 0.45 ) pmol / L]. Conclusions: In this study, metformin had no effect on serum levels of GLP -1, with improvement in insulin resistance. |
