| Sumari: | The consumption of alcohol is a public health problem and currently its relationship with multiple pathologies and mortality is known. Objective: To analyze the relationship between alcohol use and mortality. Method: An investigation of cases, retrospective and analytical, based on the review of clinical records is designed. The sample was intentional and not probabilistic and includes hospitalized patients who died in the Hospital General del Oeste, Caracas, Venezuela.in any department between the january 2006 and january 2016, of any gender and older than 18 years. Statistical treatment: a statistical description was made through measures of central tendency (mean and SD) and percentage. Comparison of the frequencies of the variables was made through T student two tails for numeric and Chi square for the sample modified. Results: 276 stories were reviewed. Group A (non-consumers) had 185 deaths and group B (consumers) were 91. In group A 55.1% were women and in group B 85.7% were men. In group A the age average was 65.4 ± 19 SD years and for group B 59.6 ± 15.1 SD years. In both groups Graffar IV predominated. The use of other addictive drugs was observed in 69% in the B group and 42% in the A group. Pneumonia was the most frequent cause of hospitalization in both groups. The main complication was sepsis. The comparison between mortality and alcohol intake was statistically related only to pulmonary thromboembolism. Conclusion: abnormal consumption predominated in men, there was a higher frequency of addictive drug use in the consumer group and only pulmonary thromboembolism was statistically related to mortality |
