España (2023), núm. 69: 069-***, pp. 1-13Las actividades del puerto de Maracaibo adquieren un fuerte impulso a mediados del siglo XIX gracias a las exportaciones de café, dominadas por comerciantes extranjeros. Estas casas muestran su gran habilidad para irradiar sus nexos comerciales y redes de acopio de materias primas y distribución de mercancías. En esta compleja trama en la que se entrecruzan productores y comerciantes, destacan las firmas de origen alemán y también algunas italianas. En el marco de la primera guerra mundial, los efectos de la crisis de 1929 y las políticas proteccionistas de la Alemania en los años treinta, las compañías alemanas sufren constantes impactos que originan múltiples dificultades para proseguir con estas actividades. Por otra parte, el declive de la economía agroexportadora venezolana, la consolidación de una economía centrada en la explotación petrolera y las condiciones de la segunda posguerra se acoplan para asestar un duro golpe a las tradicionales casas comerciales, en un ambiente cada vez menos propicio para la producción agroexportadora. The activities of the port of Maracaibo acquired a strong boost in the mid-nineteenth century thanks to coffee exports, dominated by foreign merchants. These houses show their great ability to radiate their commercial links and networks of collection of raw materials and distribution of merchandise towards the agricultural spaces of the Venezuelan Andean states and Cúcuta, belonging to Colombia. In this complex plot in which producers and merchants intersect, German firms stand out, as well as some Italian ones. Within the framework of the First World War, the effects of the 1929 crisis and the protectionist policies of Germany in the 1930s, German companies suffered multiple difficulties to continue these activities.
