| الملخص: | Breastmilk is the ideal nourishment during the first months of life, given the amount of virtues it possesses. However, even though a number of studies have determined that the use of formula increases the risk of contracting infectious diseases, an alarming number of people continue to use it. GOAL: Determine the incidence and severity of respiratory and gastrointestinal infectious diseases in healthy infants between 30 days of life and 6 months of age that were fed with breastmilk, formula or a combination of both. METHODS: this is a transverse study, with an intentional, non-probabilistic sample. The data was obtained through a survey, resulting in a total sample of 100 infants, after taking into account the inclusion criteria. RESULTS: The incidence of infectious diseases was 69% in the first 6 months of life, and 62% of all infants received both breast milk and formula. The group with the lowest percentage of infectious diseases was that fed exclusively with breastmilk, while those fed partially or totally with formula had a higher prevalence of disease, being less severe in the former group. All the infants who suffered severe infections were fed with both breastmilk and formula CONCLUSIONS: through this study it is possible to observe the protection (in prevalence as well as severity) given by exclusively feeding an infant with breast milk, which decreases as formula consumption increases. |
