Most of the mothers were between 20 and 34 years old; 41.7% (134) were diagnosed during the preconceptional period; 41.7% (134) during the gestation; 10.3% (33) during the puerperium; and 6.2% (20) in the postnatal period. 20.9% (67) of newborns had low weight; 25.5% (82) had complications at birth; and 82.9% (238) were properly given neonatal zidovudine. A general HIV infection rate of 5.6% (18) was observed, including a gradual increment with the date of maternal diagnostic, between 1.4% (CI: 0.18 – 5.20) for the preconceptional period and 50.0% (CI: 25.58 – 74.41) for the postnatal period. Maternal gestational treatment, peripartum zidovudine, elective cesarean, neonatal zidovudine and not maternal lactation were statistically significant protective factors for HIV infection. Conclusions: Prenatal control and compliance of the HIV Prevention Protocol are the key to reduce HIV vertical transmission. |

Método: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo mediante la revisión de historias médicas y Fichas de Exposición Perinatal VIH, durante 2005- 2010. Resultados: Se incluyó un total de 321 individuos. El 78,5% (n=139) provienen de los estados Miranda y Distrito Capital. La mayoría de las madres presentó edad entre 20 y 34 años, el 41,7% (n=134) se diagnosticó durante el período preconcepcional, el 41,7%(n=134) durante la gestación, 10,3% (n=33) durante el puerperio y 6,2% (n=20) durante el período postnatal. Los recién nacidos presentaron 20,9% (n=67) de bajo peso al nacer, el 25,5% (n=82) alguna complicación durante este período y el 82,9% (n=238) recibió zidovudina neonatal de forma adecuada. Se observó una tasa general de infección VIH de 5,6% (n=18), con un progresivo ascenso en la tasa de infección según la fecha de diagnóstico materno desde 1,4% (IC: 0,18-5,20) en el período preconcepcional, hasta 50,0% (IC: 25,58-74,41) en el postnatal.
